Amritsar City Guide

Amritsar is a beautiful city in the Indian State of Punjab. It is one of the most colorful and vibrant cities in India. It is an important pilgrimage centre for Sikh Religion. Literally, Amritsar means “the Pool of the Nectar of Immortally”. The city is home to Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple. The city is spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh Religion. It is also known for historical significance as well as religious significance. It is the city which has witnessed the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in the year of 1919 under British rule.
Golden Temple
The city of Amritsar is predominantly associated with Sikh religion. There are many attractive places and religious shrines in Amritsar which attract many visitors through out the year from all over the world. Golden Temple (housing the Guru Granth Sahib) and Amrit Sar Lake (Pool of Immortal Nectar) are major landmarks of the city. Besides many Sikh Gurudwaras & sacred places, there are also many Hindu temples in the city which draws tourists to the city.

Places of Tourist Interest in Amritsar:

Golden Temple:
The temple is also called Sri Harmandir Sahib. It was laid by Sikh Guru Ram Das in the 14th century. It is one of the most sacred sites of Sikh Religion. The temple complex is surrounded by a beautiful manmade lake called Amritsar Lake (the Pool of Immortal Nectar). It has four doorways and beautifully decorated arches. The temple complex is excellent example of architectural brilliance which draws the attention of many tourists though out the year from all over the world. Although, the temple is prinQuerycipally a Sikh pilgrimage spot, it is visited and revered by people of all religion and faiths.

Jallianwala Bagh:
It is sited near the famous Golden Temple. It bears the testimony to the tragedy called Jallianwala Bagh Massacre during the time of British Raj. It is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Amritsar.
